A study published in Clinical, Cosmetic, and Investigational Dermatology assessed the effect of near-infrared low-level laser therapy on acne lesions.

This prospective study included 27 women between 18 to 45 years of age who had mild-to-severe acne. The participants received 6 sessions of 785 nm low-level laser with a power density of 80 mW/cm2 – every 2 weeks.

This therapeutic modality rendered notable improvements in acne lesions––concerning the number of noninflammatory and inflammatory lesions and led to a marked reduction in sebum production. There were no treatment-related adverse effects.

Therefore, it was concluded that a six-treatment series using a near-infrared low-level laser is a safe and effective noninvasive therapeutic option for acne vulgaris. It was stated that a low-level laser can be a good alternative for acne management and can aid in limiting systemic alternative use.
